Today, the Institute for Market Transformation welcomes Jonathan Arnold, President and CEO of Arnold Development Group and Carlton Brown, Principal of Direct Invest Development, LLC to its Board of Directors. The organization also announces Adam Hinge, Managing Director at Sustainable Energy Partnerships as the organization’s Board Chair, while David B. Goldstein, IMT’s long-serving Board Chair, transitions to Founding Chair.
Sandra Henry, Senior Director of Energy and Sustainability at Elevate Energy will serve as IMT’s Board Treasurer. Charlotte Mathews, Director of Sustainability at Sidewalk Labs will serve as IMT’s Board Secretary.
“As IMT heads into its 25th year, we are focused on driving a decade of action to ensure buildings protect the people in them and the world around them. Our board of directors plays an essential guiding role in focusing our efforts for maximum impact,” said Lotte Schlegel, Executive Director of IMT. “We are grateful for the contributions of our board members in strengthening our effectiveness as an organization. Carlton and Jonathan both bring important real-world perspectives of high-performing, community-oriented development, and we welcome them to the team.”

Jonathan Arnold, Carlton Brown join board
Jonathan Arnold is founder and CEO of the Arnold Development Group, a full-service real estate development company that specializes in creating high-performance buildings in transit-oriented neighborhoods. His firm is currently developing Second and Delaware Apartments, the world’s largest Passive House-certified building, and is working on an historic, mixed-use development that will produce two times the power it consumes. Arnold holds an architecture degree from Cornell University and a master’s in real estate development from Columbia University. He is well versed at managing the development process, including planning, zoning, and structuring creative capital stacks to produce high quality buildings with low carbon footprints.
Carlton Brown is the principal of Direct Invest Development, LLC, where he focuses on developing strategies to bring capital markets to disinvested communities and invest in the development of “sustainable restorative” human settlements. This strategy of sustainable restorative development addresses human social, economic, and cultural capital development while preserving environmental resources for future generations and returning a market rate for return for investors.
David B. Goldstein named Founding Chair, Adam Hinge named Chair
David B. Goldstein, who co-founded IMT in 1996, transitions to Founding Chair for the organization’s board of directors. Dr. Goldstein currently co-directs the energy program of the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC). He has been instrumental in the development of energy efficiency standards for new buildings and appliances at the regional and national levels in the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, and China, and plans to continue this work through IMT and NRDC.
“It is an honor to succeed David Goldstein as IMT Board Chair,” said Adam Hinge. “David had the visionary foresight to found IMT nearly 25 years ago, and has overseen its growth such that a increasing number of policy makers and other experts rely on IMT for its expertise on high-performing buildings. We are lucky that David will continue as a member of the Board to help guide IMT moving forward.”
“I am delighted to watch as Adam steps up to the plate to lead the IMT Board. His energy and insights will enable IMT extend its leadership in policies that stop climate change as thoroughly and quickly as possible,” said Goldstein.
In addition, Henrietta Davis, former Mayor of Cambridge, Mass., and Paul Waide, Director of Waide Strategic Efficiency, depart the board, effective November 12. Both shaped the high-impact place-based policy work of IMT over the last decade. Joyce Mihalik, Chief Operating Officer of NOPEC, a council of governments who have formulated electric and natural gas aggregation in their communities, departed the board earlier this year. As a member of IMT’s Executive Committee, Mihalik played an invaluable role in organizational oversight over her five-year tenure on the board.
IMT’s Board of Directors advises on strategic and operational leadership at the organization. Arnold, Brown, Goldstein, Henry, Hinge, and Matthews, are joined by Matt Eggers, investor and company builder at Breakthrough Energy Ventures; Alan Miller, a consultant for climate finance and policy and former senior staff member of the Climate Business Department, International Finance Corporation; and Eric Walker, Climate and Clean Energy Strategist for Open Buffalo.
