To increase building electrification while keeping energy costs affordable, we need new approaches to heating and cooling our buildings. The General Services Administration (GSA) announced on July 18 that it has selected IMT’s Very High Efficiency (VHE) VHE HVAC approach to be part of its 2024 Green Proving Ground energy awards program. Leveraging GSA’s real estate portfolio to evaluate innovative building technologies, the program aims to drive down operating costs in federal buildings and help lead market transformation through the deployment of new technologies.
The VHE HVAC approach can be applied in more than half the commercial buildings in the country. Combining high-efficiency equipment with innovative critical design guidelines, the approach makes it possible to decarbonize buildings without increasing either electricity use or demand. VHE HVAC has been successfully demonstrated in twenty buildings with results validated by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Through this award, IMT will work with GSA to install a VHE HVAC-compliant system in a federally-owned building and monitor its performance.
