There are many ways to tell an energy story. Case studies and fact sheets capture specific successes and goals of a project or program. The overall achievements and benefits to the community should also be captured. When communicating about your policy or program, case studies and fact sheets help provide detailed information. A case study often highlights specific achievements and outlines how a project demonstrates excellence in energy efficiency, while a fact sheet often summarizes activities within a policy or program. This guide provides an overview of what case studies and fact sheets are, how to develop them, and also provides city examples from Boston, Reno, and Des Moines.

This resource is part of the City Energy Project Resource Library. Launched in 2019, the library is the culmination of 6+ years of work on the ground in 20 U.S. cities to reduce energy use in large buildings. The City Energy Project is a joint project of IMT and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). For more information, visit www.cityenergyproject.org.
